How to choose a used Audi

These six tips will help you choose a suitable used Audi and prepare for a viewing. Focus on the individual car’s service records, equipment and actual condition.

• Service history

  Ask for the service records and check that they match the car’s mileage and age. Ask about repairs carried out, parts replaced and any insurance claims; if documents are missing or contradict each other, allow for a more thorough independent inspection before you buy.

• Model and size

  When choosing a used Audi, consider the size and body type depending on how you will use the car. For city driving and frequent parking, choose a more compact car; for a family, compare estates and SUVs; and for longer journeys, consider comfort as well as space for passengers. For a specific car, check its dimensions, how easy it is to get in, the space in the rear seats and the size of the boot.

• Engine and powertrain

  With Audi you will come across electric cars, petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrids and mild hybrids. Consider the length of your journeys, your annual mileage and whether you can charge at home or at work. With a plug-in hybrid or an electric car, check in advance that charging will fit in with how you use the car; with a combustion engine, focus on the documented servicing of the specific engine.

• Gearbox

  In used Audis you will find, among other things, the S tronic dual-clutch automatic gearbox and the tiptronic conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter. Whether the gearbox is manual or automatic, on the test drive check how the car pulls away, how smoothly it changes gear and how it reverses, and watch for any messages on the display. If the car has quattro all-wheel drive, check that the tyres match and that it runs smoothly without vibration.

• Equipment

  Compare the specific items of equipment, not just the name of the trim line. Try out the driver assistance systems, headlights, infotainment, air conditioning, heating, phone connection and steering-wheel controls.

• Condition and inspection

  When viewing the car, check the bodywork, paint, glass, tyres, brakes, suspension, interior and the operation of all controls. For a car with a combustion engine, check the cold start, how the engine runs and any exhaust smoke. For an electrified version, ask for the available information on the condition of the relevant battery and its system. For a plug-in hybrid or an electric car, also try charging and ask to be shown the charging cables.
