How to choose a used Superb

The Superb has changed so much over the last decade that there are noticeable differences between generations and versions. These steps will guide you through the choice.

Third or fourth generation

According to Škoda the third generation was presented in February 2015, the update was announced for May 2019 and the fourth generation was presented on 2 November 2023. Check the generation of a specific car by its VIN and technical data; the date of first registration is only a rough guide.
Liftback or Combi

Škoda offers the Superb as a liftback and as a Combi. The body style is in the car’s detail; check the volume and shape of the luggage space on the car you are interested in.
The iV plug-in hybrid

A plug-in hybrid exists for the third generation (iV, from the 2019 update) and for the fourth. Electric ranges differ by version, methodology and period, so always look for them for the specific car.
Engine and drive

For the fourth generation Škoda lists petrol and diesel engines, a mild hybrid and a plug-in hybrid; the most powerful engines have all-wheel drive as standard. For older cars check the drive in the detail.
Gearbox

For the fourth generation Škoda lists a DSG automatic gearbox with the selector on the steering column. For the third generation check the gearbox type in the car’s detail, and on a test drive pay attention to pulling away and shifting.
VIN, documents and inspection

Ask for the service records and documents before you visit and check the VIN. With a plug-in hybrid also ask about the charging cable and the documentation of the drive. For available cars you can book a test drive in the detail.

At the unveiling of the fourth generation Škoda listed the following engines and drive:

2.0 TDI in 110 kW and 142 kW versions
a plug-in hybrid with a 1.5 TSI engine and an electric motor
all-wheel drive as standard with the most powerful diesel and petrol engines; DSG automatic gearbox with the selector on the steering column

How do I check which generation of Superb I am buying?

By the car’s VIN and technical data. The date of first registration is only a rough guide: according to Škoda the third generation was presented in February 2015, the fourth on 2 November 2023, and an update announced for May 2019 took place in between.

Liftback or Combi?

Škoda offers the Superb in both body styles, for the third generation first as a liftback and the estate a few months later. You will see the difference in the detail and during the inspection, where you should try the luggage space.

What is the Superb iV and what electric range does it have?

The Superb iV is the plug-in hybrid of the third generation. Before launch (9 Sep 2019) Škoda stated a 1.4 TSI of 115 kW, an 85 kW electric motor and up to 62 km purely electric under WLTP. For the fourth generation it states a plug-in hybrid with a range of over 100 km under WLTP (2 Nov 2023). These are different versions and periods; always look for the figures of the specific car.

Which engines does the fourth generation offer?

At the unveiling Škoda listed the 1.5 TSI with a mild hybrid, the 2.0 TSI (150 and 195 kW), the 2.0 TDI (110 and 142 kW) and a plug-in hybrid; the most powerful engines have all-wheel drive as standard. Check a specific car by its VIN and technical data.

Does the Superb have an automatic gearbox?
