  • Seventh or eighth generation

    According to Volkswagen the Golf VII had its premiere on 4 September 2012 and was in showrooms from spring 2013; production of the combustion-engine Golf VII ended in December 2019 with the launch of the eighth generation. Check the generation of a specific car by its VIN and technical data; the date of first registration is only a rough guide.

  • Golf or Golf Variant

    The Variant (estate) is listed in the catalogue as a separate model; you can find it through the link among the related models, if it is on offer. This page belongs to cars listed as the Golf.

  • Engine designations

    TSI is a petrol engine, TDI a diesel, eTSI a mild hybrid, and eHybrid and GTE are plug-in hybrids; GTI, GTD and R are Golf VII ranges. You will find the exact designation and output in the car’s detail.

  • Gearbox

    You will find manual and automatic gearboxes, including DSG. Check the type and the number of gears in the car’s detail; on a test drive pay attention to pulling away and shifting.

Golf: generations, updates and drives according to Volkswagen

The year a generation was introduced is not the year a particular car was built. Check the year of manufacture and the version by the VIN and the technical data; the date of first registration is only a rough guide.

Designations and drives

Volkswagen describes TSI as petrol engines with turbocharging and direct injection and TDI as diesel engines with common rail injection. It lists the GTI, GTD and R ranges for the Golf VII.

For the eighth-generation Golf, Volkswagen lists in its January 2024 press release on the update TSI, TDI, eTSI mild hybrid and eHybrid and GTE plug-in hybrid versions.

Plug-in hybrids and electric: what is from which period

With the Golf VII, according to Volkswagen, the GTE was the first plug-in hybrid Golf and the e-Golf the first electric Volkswagen produced on a large scale.

In the release cited Volkswagen gives the range as “combined” and does not state the test cycle. The figures apply only to these versions after the 2024 update, not to older plug-in hybrids or to mild hybrids.

The Golf Variant is a separate model

The Variant is listed separately in the catalogue. According to Volkswagen the Golf VII Variant was on sale from spring 2013 and the eighth generation of the Variant had its world premiere in September 2020 (pre-sales in Germany from 10 September 2020); for it Volkswagen stated all eTSI engines with a 7-speed DSG.

What is the difference between the seventh- and eighth-generation Golf?

What electric range does the Golf GTE or eHybrid have?

In its press release of 16 May 2024 Volkswagen states for the updated Golf up to 143 km (eHybrid) and up to 131 km (GTE) “combined”, without naming the test cycle. The figures do not apply to older plug-in hybrids; look for them in the technical data of a specific car.

Does the Golf have a manual gearbox or a DSG?

You will find both. For the plug-in hybrids after the 2024 update Volkswagen lists a six-speed DSG gearbox; for the eTSI of the 2020 Golf Variant a seven-speed DSG. The gearbox of a specific car is in its detail.

Is the e-Golf an electric car and what range does it have?

According to Volkswagen the e-Golf was the first electric Volkswagen produced on a large scale. Check the range, battery capacity and warranty conditions on the specific car; they differ by version and year of manufacture.

Can I finance a used Golf and view it remotely?
