How to choose a used Octavia

The Octavia is sold across generations and versions, so the same name does not mean the same car. These six steps will help you get your bearings before you look at a specific car.

Generation and update

According to Škoda the third generation debuted in November 2012 and received a comprehensive update in February 2017; the fourth premiered in November 2019 and the updated version in February 2024. Check the generation of a specific car by its VIN and technical data; the date of first registration is only a rough guide.
Liftback or Combi

The Octavia comes as a liftback and as an estate (Combi); according to Škoda the Scout is an estate. You will find the body style in the car’s detail, and you should try the luggage space during the inspection.
Fuel and drive

For the third generation Škoda also lists a G-TEC version running on CNG, and for the fourth the e-TEC mild hybrid and the iV plug-in hybrid. The type of drive is shown in the car’s detail; the fuel filter in the listing helps narrow down the choice.
Gearbox

For the fourth generation Škoda stated at launch a 6-speed manual gearbox and the DSG. The detail shows which gearbox a given car has; on a test drive pay attention to how it pulls away and shifts.
RS, Scout, GreenLine, G-TEC

These versions have different technology or modifications from the ordinary Octavia. Ask which version it is, and check the output and drive in the technical data of the specific car.

Premiere, market launch and update

Škoda distinguishes the presentation of a generation, the start of sales and a later update. A year from any one of them therefore does not determine the generation or equipment of a particular car.

Frequently asked questions about a used Octavia

How can I tell which generation of Octavia it is?

Reliably by the car’s VIN and technical data. The date of first registration is only a rough guide: according to Škoda the third generation debuted in November 2012 and the fourth premiered in November 2019, but updates (February 2017, February 2024) reach production gradually.

Liftback or Combi?

Škoda offers the Octavia in both body styles. They differ in the shape of the body and in luggage space, which you should compare during the inspection; according to Škoda the Scout is an estate. The body style of a car is in its detail.

What do e-TEC, G-TEC and iV mean?

According to Škoda, e-TEC is a mild hybrid with a 48 V system, G-TEC a version running on CNG and iV a plug-in hybrid. Škoda lists e-TEC and iV for the fourth generation and G-TEC for the third and the fourth. Check the exact drive in the car’s detail.

Does the Octavia have a manual gearbox or a DSG?

For the fourth generation Škoda stated at launch a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed and a 7-speed DSG (6-speed with the iV, 7-speed with the e-TEC). The gearbox of a specific car is in its detail.

What electric range does the Octavia iV have?

In its launch materials for the fourth generation (2019) Škoda stated up to 55 km for the iV version under the WLTP methodology. It is a laboratory figure for this version at launch; you will find the real range of a specific car in its technical data and on a test drive.

How do the Octavia RS and Scout differ from the ordinary version?

The RS and the Scout are special versions. For the third generation Škoda lists the RS 245 with 245 hp after the 2017 update; for the fourth there is also the RS as the first plug-in hybrid RS iV and the Scout is an estate. Always check the output and equipment of a specific car.
